The Lindholmens Tekniska Gymnasium (LTG), a secondary school in Gothenburg, Sweden, is located on the site of a former shipyard in Lindholmen Science Park. The Gothenburg architects from KUB Arkitekter designed a building which is flooded with light and with a saw-tooth roof reminiscent of waves moving on the sea, thus incorporating the historic use of Lindholmen. Approximately 1000 students can either gain a higher education entrance qualification or learn a technical training occupation at the LTG. Lindholmen is situated in the northern part of Gothenburg's oldest district, Haga, on the River of the Geats (Göta älv). Today, the steadily growing Science Park is home to 375 companies, 2 universities and 6 secondary schools such as the LTG. Many of the newly constructed buildings were named after ships which were built in the old shipyards of Gothenburg. Every day, Lindholmen is bustling with 30,000 people, who work, study or reside in a sunny southwest-facing setting.

World's first 230 V smoke extraction solution with AdComBus (ACB)

When the cables were routed for the entire smoke and heat exhaust system at the LTG, great distances had to be covered. In addition to 6 individually controllable fire protection zones, it was also necessary to create more smoke extraction zones. To achieve optimal, cost-optimised cabling, the experts at D+H Sverige decided to use predominantly 230 V window drives. This meant that the required cable cross-sections could be reduced to a minimum. Controlled by a digital CPS-M smoke vent control panel, all of the drives in this smoke extraction solution communicate by means of a Modbus-capable ACB-BSY+ gateway. This makes it possible not only to control all of the drives, but also to monitor the current status of each individual drive with just a two-wire cable. The system's control panel is connected directly to the building management system by a Modbus MRTU gateway. This connection enables alarm triggers to be received, feedback from window drives to be forwarded and fans to be started.

This extraordinary system combines 230 V window drives and 24 V window drives for natural ventilation with motor-operated fans of a powered smoke pressure system (SPS). In case of fire, an SPS uses overpressure to push the smoke out of the building through windows that have already been opened. This means that, in the event of a fire alarm, the system reacts first by opening all the windows. Next, the fans installed in the first floor blow fresh air into the building. However, these fans do not start until at least 10 windows in the building have been reported as successfully opened. This is the only way to guarantee that a balance between outflowing smoke and inflowing supply air is maintained at all times. At the same time, the thermal load on the building structure is reduced by targeted heat removal.
